We’ve been in the Orlando AC repair business since 1991, so we know that the condition of your attic insulation is one of the crucial factors that determines the quality of your indoor environment. Under the Florida sun, insufficient attic insulation can easily mean a hot, humid and uncomfortable house in the summer. It could also mean pockets of cold air throughout your house during the colder months of the year. Make it a habit to inspect the condition of your attic insulation regularly so you and your family can enjoy a safe and comfortable home all year long.
R-Value
Your insulation’s R-value refers to the material’s resistance to heat flow. Although this is just one factor in determining the effectiveness of an insulation material, it is generally understood that a higher R-value provides more efficient insulation.
In a warm-weather state like Florida, it is typically recommended that insulation carry at least an R-38 level. At this ideal level of insulation, heated or cooled air is prevented from escaping your house through the roof. This helps maintain an even, comfortable temperature in your house throughout the year.
Amount of Insulation
Over time, your insulation could have compressed, making it less efficient in preventing heated or cooled air from escaping. Different materials have varying ideal thicknesses for efficient insulation. Blown-in cellulose insulation has a recommended R-value of 3.5 per inch, while blown-in loose fiberglass only needs an R-value of 2.5 per inch.
Measure the level of insulation material you have in your attic on a cool day and be sure to work with adequate light so you will get an accurate reading.
Humidity
The amount of moisture in your attic can affect how well your attic insulation works. Moist insulation is less effective in keeping your home comfortable. Make sure your attic has proper ventilation to keep your insulation material dry and efficient. If you continue to have a problem with humidity after you improve the ventilation in your attic, the moisture could be coming from another source. Find its source and implement a solution so your attic insulation can be more effective as well.
