Have you looked in your freezer lately? Most of us grab things off the top and put new items in, but it is easy for the depths of this space to become a vast cavern that is seldom explored. Cleaning out your freezer is a chore that you may wish could be delegated to someone else. However, once you get started, it is not as bad as you think it will be. We’ve put together a few tips on how to properly clean out your freezer.
Tips For Cleaning Your Freezer
• Remove Everything – To complete a deep cleaning, you must first remove everything from the freezer. If you have a cooler or secondary freezer, use it. Otherwise, utilize the refrigerator and work quickly, so items do not thaw.
• Toss Anything Questionable – While we all have good intentions regarding everything we put in our freezer, sometimes you will find items are simply past their prime. If you aren’t sure if something is still good, the U.S. government’s food safety website is a great place to look for more information.
• Defrost the Freezer – If there is a layer of ice built up on the interior of your freezer, you need to defrost it thoroughly. Unplug and let the freezer sit, with the door open. If you want to speed things along, a hair dryer can be a great tool.
• Clean it Out – Once everything has melted and the excess water has drained away, you need to wipe every interior surface. You don’t want to use a harsh chemical, so making a mixture of warm water, vinegar and a small amount of dish soap will likely work. If you have stubborn stains, try a baking soda paste.
